Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD, but is currently at capacity - email supervisor to discuss availability.
Alexandra is an Associate Professor in Agricultural and Food Economics with The Centre for Global Food and Resources (CGFAR) at the University of Adelaide. Her research focuses on evaluating the adoption of agricultural innovations on income and household welfare-related outcomes. She uses econometric methods, lab-in-field experiments, farmer decision-making models, and qualitative methods. Alexandra’s work includes collaboration with agricultural scientists, anthropologists, and geographers. Her current research projects study the economic and social impacts of mobile finance on men and women in farming households in Cambodia and Laos, and the impacts of the national seed system on food production and food security in Timor-Leste. She conducted work on the evaluation of the adoption of improved seed varieties and postharvest practices in Angola, Haiti, Nicaragua, Uganda, and Vanuatu, and dairy farming practices in Indonesia. Alexandra researched farmers’ decisions on whether to grow trees or crops in the highlands of western Kenya. She has presented her work in Australia, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, and the United States. Alexandra has extensive experience with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). She has worked as a Research Associate at the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University and consulted for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Alexandra has experience with the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). Alexandra is a Fulbright alumna.
I am an applied economist working on international development, specifically evaluating the impacts of development interventions and programs, analysing the effects of agricultural innovations at different levels of the agricultural value chain, and with an interest on women in agriculture. I also have a growing interest in the resilience of agricultural value chains to shocks, the roles that different actors across the chain play, and food security.
My current research projects include:
Building the evidence base on the impacts of mobile financial services for women and men in farming households in Laos and Cambodia
Impact Assessment Seeds of Life Project in Timor Leste
Enhancing Food and Nutrition Security through an Improved Understanding of Farming Households and Value Chains in Timor-Leste
Evaluating service provision approaches and value-chain interventions to support milk cooperatives to grow the smallholder dairy sector of Indonesia
