I conduct research on Motor Neurone Disease (MND). This involves basic research using a facial nerve avulsion model to evaluate motoneuronal rescue factors and determine their mechanism of action, as well as studies of post-mortem material from patients with MND and other age-related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease. We are particularly interested in the rescue of motoneurones by an isoform of IGF-1 made by active muscle (MGF) and those aspects of the inflammatory response that prevent motoneuronal death.

I am also engaged in research on evaluating the effectiveness of innovations in human anatomy teaching and the neuroscience of learning in anatomy.

Teaching

I am an Education Specialist in Anatomy,a member of the Adelaide Education Academy Executive Committee and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I currently teach into 11 courses across Medicine, Health and Medical Sciences and Nursing and supervise 2 honours and 2 PhD students. I coordinate Anatomy for MBBS year 1 (semesters 1 & 2) and MBBS year 2 Applied Anatomy of the Cranial Nerves (semester 2). I co-coordinate B.Nursing year 2 Biology of Human Disease (semesters 1 & 2). I also teach anatomy and neuroanatomy to FRACS candidates and trainee psychiatrists.

I have taught human gross anatomy to medical students for 30 years in several London medical school and most recently at the University of Adelaide. As my PhD is in neuroanatomy, I have a particular interest in the anatomy of the nervous system and have taught this for a similar period of time. I have also taught human biology, neuroscience, histology and embryology to medical nursing, physiotherapy and science students.
