Associate Professor Leonie Heilbronn

Leonie Heilbronn
Group Leader
Adelaide Medical School
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

Associate Professor Leonie Heilbronn is Group Leader of the Obesity and Metabolism group based within the Nutrition and Metabolism Theme at SAHMRI. Her research focus is to better understand the molecular and physiological basis of obesity and its co-morbidities, and in particular the role that insulin resistance plays in the aetiology of these conditions. Her research is at the interface between basic and clinical science, and she currently has research projects aimed at understanding mechanisms of insulin resistance in skeletal muscle and in adipose tissue utilising various environmental perturbations (e.g. overfeeding, calorie restriction, exercise, hyperbaric oxygen therapy). She is also keenly interested in the role of nutrition in healthy ageing and is a member of the Robinson Research Institute, where she also studies mechanism of insulin resistance in IVF.

Research Interests

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR LEONIE HEILBRONN is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow at the University of Adelaide and is based at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), where she leads the Obesity and Metabolism laboratory. Dr Heilbronn completed her PhD studies in 2001, and went on to research positions in the United States and in Sydney, before returning to Adelaide in 2010. Her research is at the interface between basic and clinical science, and her research goal is to reduce chronic disease risk and insulin resistance through a greater understanding of nutrition and metabolism, and mechanisms underpinning these relationships particularly in muscle and adipose tissue.  She is also interested in the role of nutrition in healthy ageing. She has published more than 75 peer reviewed papers in scientific journals, and is an associate editor for Obesity Research and Clinical Practice.
