Dr Jian Zuo is a Professor of sustainable construction, School of Architecture and Civil Engineering, The University of Adelaide. He is the chief investigator of a number of projects commissioned and funded by governments in China and Australia such as the Australian Research Council and Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute.

His main research interest relates to achieve good health, safety and sustainability at both building and urban levels. There include: using alternative construction methods (e.g. prefabrication), technologies (Building Information Modelling) and policy interventions to achieve better environmental and economic sustainability of development projects. His other main research interests include: environmental management and monitoring, construction and demolition waste management, health and wellbeing of construction workers, smart construction, productivity of building users, indoor environmental quality in buildings, the mechanism for generation and mitigation of dust across the life-cycle of buildings.

He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and 11 ESI Highly Cited Papers. His research is well recognized by the academic society, drawing more than 25,900 citations since 2011 with H-index of 87 (Google Scholar).

He is serving as Co-Editors-in-Chief of Journal of Green Building, Executive Editor of Journal of Cleaner Production, Co-Editors-in-Chief of Journal of Cleaner Waste Systems, Associate Editor for Ecological Indicators, Associate Editor for Journal of Energy, Ecology and Environment, Editor for International Journal of Construction Management and an editorial board member of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, etc.

Professor Zuo has close relationship with the industry. He has been engaged by both Australian and international professional bodies to review green building and low carbon city development tools as well as resource efficiency issues.

Main research interests:

  • Assessment of environmental, economic and social impacts of developments at the building, community, city and national levels
  • using alternative construction methods (e.g. prefabrication), technologies (Building Information Modelling) and policy interventions to achieve better environmental and economic sustainability of development projects;
  • solid waste management via reduction, reuse and recycling via both technologies (e.g. GIS, IoT sensing) and managerial approaches (e.g. attitudes and behaviour, policy effectiveness);
  • health and wellbeing of construction workers;
  • digital and smart construction;
  • productivity of building users;
  • indoor environmental quality in buildings; and
  • mitigation of dust across the lifecycle of buildings.
