Ruidong Chang joined the University of Adelaide in 2020, after working as a joint research fellow at Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore, and Department of Building, National University of Singapore, and an assistant professor at Bond University. His leads a Green Construction Analytics HDR research group at School of Civil Engineering and Construction Management, focusing on multi-dimensional (Materials-Energy-Emissions nexus) environmental monitoring, modelling and optimisation approaches for built environments through advanced data collection and processing techniques, at both the building and urban scales. He integrates approaches from building science, data science, management (e.g. corporate sustainability), and strategy/innovation (e.g. sustainability transition theories) to address multifaceted sustainability challenges of built environment.
Managing one environmental aspect (e.g. reducing operational energy consumption) may be achieved by a compromised performance on other aspects (e.g. increased material usage). A truly sustainable system needs to be designed considering whole-spectrum, multi-dimensional environmental impacts simultaneously. To conduct research for Green Construction Analytics, Ruidong's research group, including more than 10 PhD students at any time since 2022, has used the following approaches.
Equipment: drones (DJI), IoT-based (LoRaWAN) or stand-alone environmental sensors such as energy and particulate matters sensors, cameras, VR headsets (Oculus Quest 2 and 3), iPhone Pro (LiDAR sensor) and laser scanner (BLK360).
Data: 3D point clouds, sensor data, camera images, spatial data, statistical data from Census and other sources, questionnaire data, interview data, software data (e.g. LCA data) and data from engineering simulations
Analytics methods: qualitative methods such as directed content analysis, statistical models such as structural equation modelling and spatial lag model, machine learning algorithms (deep neural network DNN, random forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, LSTM), NLP, computer vision (e.g. VoteNet-based object detection), mathematical optimisation methods (e.g. mixed-integer linear programming), and various simulations/modelling approaches such as system dynamics, social network analysis and agent-based modelling.
Outcomes: new real-world environmental monitoring datasets (e.g. energy consumption, microclimate and PM levels from construction sites); software plugin (e.g. Revit plugin), validated digital workflows (e.g. iPhone-based building components detection workflow), validated environmental performance forecasting models; and environmental impacts assessment reports.
He is the Lead Chief Investigator for ARC Discovery Project DP260104414, Advancing the Integration of Greenery and Solar Energy for Buildings. $620,713.00; Associate Professor Ruidong Chang; Professor Veronica Soebarto; Professor Robert Hill; Professor Jian Zuo; Dr Ehsan Sharifi; Professor Yupeng Wu. The project will use drones (with LiDAR and thermal cameras), IoT sensors, and various equipment to build monitoring systems for tree-solar-building scenarios, producing real-world data for simulations and optimisations balancing the interactions among urban greening, building energy consumption, and rooftop solar power generation. He is also a Chief Investigator for IC220100030, ARC Training Centre for Next-Gen Architectural Manufacturing. $5,328,339.00
Ruidong has participated in various research projects over the past 8 years during his previous employments, funded or supported by institutions such as the Building Construction Authority of Singapore, National Science Foundation of China and International Energy Agency.
