Ruidong Chang joined the University of Adelaide in 2020, after working as a joint research fellow at Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore, and Department of Building, National University of Singapore, and an assistant professor at Bond University. His specialised research area is building a multi-dimensional (Materials-Energy-Water-Emissions nexus) environmental monitoring and modelling platform for construction projects through advanced data collection, processing and storage techniques. Optimising one environmental aspect (e.g. reducing energy consumption) may be achieved by a compromised performance on other aspects (e.g. increased material and water usage). Therefore, a truly sustainable system needs to be designed considering whole-spectrum, multi-dimensional environmental impacts simultaneously.

He has participated in various research projects funded or supported by institutions such as the Building Construction Authority of Singapore, National Science Foundation of China and International Energy Agency.

Ruidong's field of research is construction management. His team conducts interdisciplinary research linking construction engineering, computer science, environmental governance and management science to address grand environmental challenges facing the construction sector.

His research focus is 1) at the project level, building a multi-dimensional (Materials-Energy-Water-Emissions nexus) environmental monitoring (what happened) and modelling (what could happen) platform for construction projects through advanced data collection, processing and storage techniques such as Building Information Modelling, ultimately enabling the formation of Environmental Digital Twins for Construction. Based on this foundation, Ruidong then looks at 2) the firms' adoption decision making of innovative practices improving project environmental performance at the construction company/industry level, using various management and behaviour theories such as the socio-technical transition theory, innovation diffusion theory and the theory of planned behaviour, as well as the 3) government policies transitioning the construction industry towards higher environmental performance at the policy level based on governance theories such as the innovation policy mix approach. All of these areas are examined under the direction of Construction 5.0, namely how to leverage new technologies to enable sustainable construction.

His team is currently working on the following topics:

Monitor schedule
