I have successfully supervised postgraduate students in methods that adopt quantitative(for example, surveys, designs using inferential statistics,content analysis and RCT's) and qualitative approaches(for example, constant comparative method, ethnographic approaches, action research and thematic analysis). I have expertise in midwifery, child heath, women's health, palliative care, management and leadership issues. I have been successful in gaining competitive grants in the areas of midwifery, aged care and palliative care.

Over the last ten years I have presented papers at numerous international and national conferences. I am Professor of Midwifery in the School of Nursing and Midwifery,University of South Australia.
I have been the South Australian representative on the National Three Year Midwifery Degree curriculum committee for the development of standards and I am member of the Australian College of Midwifery. I have published in international midwifery journals with high impact factors with respect to the discipline (Midwifery, for example has an impact factor of 1.169 with a wide international readership). I am a reviewer for Midwifery, Breastfeeding Review and Advanced Journal of Nursing. I am one of 4 editors for the first textbook in Australia and New Zealand for practicing and student midwives, Midwifery; Preparation for Practice published in 2006 and was responsible for editing chapters and writing one chapter (“Transitions” Chapter 9 pp 152-165). I am a member of the Australian College of Midwives and have been involved in successful research contracts for the development of Competencies and Standards for Midwives for the Australian Council of Nursing and Midwifery. I have been principle supervisor for 10 PhD students, Masters and honours students and currently supervises 5 PhD students and numerous honours students. I am a member of the Research Advisory Group to the Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery and is a member of the recently convened Reference Group Core Competencies and Educational Framework for Maternity Services in Australia Project, to respond to the Ministers’ “Improving Maternity Services in Australia; The Report of the Maternity Services Review”.
