I am an Associate Professor, experienced Clinical Midwife and Registered Nurse, with more than 20 years’ experience in SA Health, predominantly in the Delivery Suite at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. I hold qualifications in nursing, midwifery, business administration, clinical education and university teaching, as well as a PhD.
My research focuses on improving maternity and women’s health outcomes through interdisciplinary, clinical and community partnerships. Key areas include cultural safety and equitable outcomes for Aboriginal women and babies, refugee health, respectful maternity care, domestic and family violence, disability, abortion, and sexual and reproductive health. I also contribute to the development and translation of evidence into obstetric and perinatal policy and clinical guidelines.
I am Academic Lead for the pre-registration midwifery programs and Program Director of the Master of Midwifery Graduate Entry at Adelaide University. My external roles include serving on the Board of the Australian Women’s Health Alliance and contributing to state and national committees focused on maternity care, women’s health, education and policy.

| 2026 | Authors: Brown A. Title: Global Competencies for Midwife Leaders. Description: Global Competencies for Midwife Leaders is an international leadership framework developed by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) to define the knowledge, skills, behaviours and attributes required for effective midwifery leadership across clinical, educational, research, organisational and policy settings. Developed through an evidence-informed process involving literature review, thematic analysis and international expert consensus, the framework establishes twelve leadership competency domains and four progressive proficiency levels spanning foundational to strategic leadership. The framework is intended to support leadership development, workforce planning, curriculum design, professional regulation, succession planning and health system strengthening globally. As an official ICM publication, it provides a common reference point for midwives, educators, employers, regulators and policymakers seeking to strengthen leadership capability and advance sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health outcomes worldwide.. Extent: 1-52. |
