Sonia Nath

Dr Sonia Nath

Postdoctoral Researcher

Adelaide Dental School

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

Dr Nath completed her Bachelor's in 2008, her Master's in Periodontology in 2013 and her PhD in Dentistry from the Adelaide Dental School in 2023. She is a postdoctoral researcher at the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health, The University of Adelaide. For her PhD, she worked closely on a novel therapy, "Oral microbiome transplants", to treat common oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease. The project involved analyzing and defining the oral microbiome among healthy donors using technologies such as 16S RNA high throughput sequencing and metabolomics. She used bioinformatics to determine "super donors" suitable for oral microbiome transplantation.
Her other areas of expertise are oral epidemiology and public health research. Her research focuses on identifying and addressing the inequalities in oral health, especially among rural populations, racial and ethnic minority groups and Indigenous populations. Currently, she is working on finding connections between general health and oral health among Indigenous South Australians using high throughput sequencing.
She has published various papers in international peer-reviewed journals and is also an active reviewer for many journals across dentistry.
