Shahraam Afshar is an Associate Professor at Laser Physics and Photonic Devices Laboratories at School of Engineering of the University of South Australia. He received his PhD in physics, laser and nonlinear optics, from the University of Adelaide in 2001. In 2001 he joined the fibre optics group at The University of Ottawa as a postdoctoral fellow, where he worked on fibre-optic, distributed, strain and temperature sensors based on Brillouin scattering. Later, he received the NCIT fellowship from National Capital Institute of Telecommunication, Canada to work on Brillouin scattering in photonic crystal fibres. In 2005, he joined the Centre of Expertise in Photonics (CoEP) at the University of Adelaide, which later formed into the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS). In 2015, he was a member of a team to form Laser Physics and Photonic Devices Laboratories at School of Engineering of the University of South Australia.   
His research is mainly focused on optical processes in high index waveguides with complex structures and their applications for linear and nonlinear processes. He has been active in the field of nonlinear processes in subwavelength waveguides and radiation of dipoles in the vicinity of optical fibres. As a new activity and over the last couple of years, his team has been working on nonlinear Fourier transform for high capacity fibre optic communication.
