Dr Robyne Garrett is an Associate Professor in Education. She teaches physical education, dance and teaching methodologies at the University of South Australia Education Futures. She is a full member of the Research in Educational and Social Inclusion Concentration (RESI). Dr Garrett’s research expertise encompasses diverse topics including the construction of gender in physical activity contexts, embodiment, and arts-based instructional approaches. She is committed to socially just and culturally sustainable teaching practice and her ongoing research interests include gender and critical pedagogies as well as creative and body-based learning.
Dr Garrett’s recent research projects have explored socially just pedagogies for refugees and disadvantaged students, whiteness studies and embodied pedagogies for equity. In 2020 she led the URIPA project ‘Becoming strong in broken places’ which investigated creative and body-based learning to serve communities of intergenerational poverty and trauma. She has also recently co-led the URIPA project ‘Disadvantaged students as ethnographers’ and worked on the ‘Provision of creative and body based learning professional development program’, sponsored by the South Australian Department for Education and Children's Services.
Dr Garrett is a prodigious author who has written ten book chapters and nearly 40 refereed journal articles. In 2018, she co-authored a book entitled ‘Health and Physical Education: Preparing Educators for the Future’. Her recent book chapters include ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ in the Handbook of primary physical education in 2018 and 'The transformative possibilities of narrative inquiry', in the Handbook of physical education pedagogies in 2017. Dr Garret has also recently been an Editorial Board Member for the Asia-Pacific Journal of Health, Sport and Physical Education, and for the journal Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education.
Dr Garrett has an established reputation as a leader and professional who is consulted to give advice on dance, health and physical education (HPE) issues pertaining to curriculum design. She has provided direction, feedback and guidance for the National Curriculum HPE Shape Paper and subsequent curriculum outline. In recognition of her leadership, services and commitment to HPE in SA, she was nominated and awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation. On a national level, Dr Garrett has also provided expert advisory services for course accreditation by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) in degrees pertaining to physical education and dance.
