I am the founding director of both the Centre for Australian Forensic Soil Science (CAFSS) and Acid Sulfate Soils Centre (ASSC). The ASSC is a multidisciplinary research centre with core research staff in Adelaide University, CSIRO and national and international network of collaborators. In ASSC my focus is on basic and applied research of acid sulfate soils associated with environmental science, mineral exploration and damage to infrastructures.
In the Centre for Australian Forensic Soil Science (CAFSS), which is a national and international facility, my focus is on the development and application in the use of earth materials as forensic evidence. I have conducted over 250 forensic investigations in collaboration with law enforcement agencies involving search and applying advanced soil and mineral analysis techniques to informing major criminal, environmental pollution and counter terrorism cases. I am also the Vice Chair of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Initiative on Forensic Geology.
I was previously a Chief Research Scientist in CSIRO (2000 to 2011) and Post Retirement and Honorary Fellow in CSIRO (2012 to 2024). I am an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) and Chair of the ATSE South Australia and Northern Territory Division. I am also a Fellow of several global soil science and geological societies and have received the following awards for outstanding contributions to science:
· Sir Joseph Verco Medal by the Royal Society of South Australia.
· The Prescott Medal and Pioneer Lecture Award by Soil Science Australia.
· The inaugural Raymond Murray Medal for Forensic Geology by the IUGS (see below webite linkages for detailed information)
· Pons Medal for outstanding contribution to acid sulfate soil science and practice by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS)
My career has focused on the interface of soil science (pedology), regolith science, mineralogy, biogeochemistry, forensic science, mineral exploration, mine site rehabilitation, climate change and viticulture as applied to:
1) Landscape processes, 2) Advanced techniques to characterize, map, monitor and manage soil-regolith systems and 3) Criminal and environmental forensic techniques for earth materials.
I have over 50 years of experience in leading major multi-disciplinary research projects and conducted over 500 specialized soil-regolith investigations and surveys, covering a variety of regions worldwide. Most of these research projects have required strong collaboration between various scientists to focus on complex soil related problems associated with a wide range of industries and agencies. This work has enabled me to acquire knowledge of the distribution and properties of global soils with a practical client-focused approach, which has achieved acceptance of the value of soil information to assist agencies in law-enforcement, management of soil & water, viticulture, forestry, mineral exploration, mine site rehabilitation and engineering:
Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS): I am the founding Director and current Deputy Director of the Acid Sulfate Soils Centre (ASSC): https://adelaideuni.edu.au/research/acid-sulfate-soils-centre/. The ASSC team has made significant advancements in understanding inland ASS, which led to the publication of the first ever book on Inland ASS in 2008. I developed and led of the Atlas of Australian Acid Sulfate Soils, program under the auspices of the National Committee for Acid Sulfate Soils allowing anyone to check for these soils before digging via The Australian National Soil Information System (ANSIS) http://doi.org/10.4225/08/512E79A0BC589. I have also improved classification schemes for ASS, including the identification of minerals like schwertmannite and jarosite, which serve as diagnostic criteria for recognising extremely acidic sulfuric material (pH < 4) in Australian and international soil classification systems. These improvements facilitate easier identification of acid sulfate soils. The development of a technical soil classification system for user-friendly hazard map legends has influenced best management principles and new policies for several regulatory agencies. I was awarded the Pons Medal for outstanding contribution to acid sulfate soil science and practice by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS): Pioneering the future of acid sulfate soils.
Mineral Exploration: I demonstrated that inland ASS may contain anomalous concentrations of elements such as Cu, Pb, Zn, Se, As and Sr within the hydrous iron-oxide mineral schwertmannite and observed irregular lead isotope compositions. This led to successfully introducing a new geochemical sampling medium for deeply buried or blind lead and zinc sulfide orebodies and the discovery of two zinc-lead mineral deposits, one of which was eventually mined.
Forensic soil science and geology: I was the founding Director of the Centre for Australian Forensic Soil Science (CAFSS),the first ever facility to drive research and innovation in the use of earth materials as forensic evidence. I have conducted over 250 forensic investigations in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, applying advanced soil and mineral analysis techniques to informing major criminal, environmental pollution and counter terrorism cases. My experience in conducting case studies, together with research has led to contributions, which extend beyond the laboratory and outside the courtroom by: (i) Publishing the first Soil Forensic Investigation User Manual with guidelines for forensic application of earth materials now used by practitioners worldwide and summarised in 3 forensic encyclopedias and taphonomy book; (ii) co-ordinating Editor of the landmark “Forensic Soil Science and Geology” 2021 volume Forensic Soil Science and Geology, published by the Geological Society of London with many publications drawing on real forensic cases globally and Australia (homicides, theft, massacres) to demonstrate the power of soil evidence in criminal investigations, (iii) publishing cutting-edge work at the Australian Synchrotron, where micro-X-ray-diffraction was used as evidence in 2 Supreme Court trials with: (a) tiny brick fragments on a murder victim’s clothing, matching them to a brick driveway and (b) mud on a murder victim’s pyjamas, matching to an estuarine soil, (iv) organizing 3 International Conferences on Soil Forensics and running hands-on soil forensic courses for police in Australia, UK, France (INTERPOL), Italy, USA, Russia, Singapore and China. For website linkages to podcasts, webinars and popular publications see:
Managing Soil damage to optic fibre cable networks. I have provided leadership in development of a special-purpose Soil Assessment Manual to minimise soil damage from shrink-swell soils and soil corrosion to the Australian telecommunication optic fibre cable network. Telstra and AARNet engineers use this methodology in installing its telecommunications network. It has saved millions of dollars.
Land-use planning. I have made many contributions across descriptive information on soils, hydrology, and best management practices. These advancements have revolutionised the communication of complex landscape information to land managers and advisors. Practical handbooks, guidelines and user-friendly classification systems are already in use in many sectors, including broadacre farming, viticulture, irrigation, commercial afforestation and wildlife conservation:
-
Land-use planning in catchments. The approach of displaying descriptive information on soils, hydrology, and best management practice along toposequences has opened new ways of communicating complex information with land managers. It has changed the management of saline and waterlogged soils in several high rainfall catchments in Australia.
-
Land-use planning of regions. The development of a new generic GIS up-scaling approach for the broad-scale mapping of factors such as waterlogging, acidity, salinity and catchment health has been extended to several other regions in Australia.
-
Draining saline soils. Developed a new system, which has changed how land managers, policy makers, and teaching institution’s view, monitor, and manage drained/disturbed saline soils.
-
Minesoils. A technical classification system for soils forming on waste-rock and spoil dumps at open-cut mining operations in Australia, based on management-related properties has been used to modify the Australian Soil Classification and Soil Taxonomy.
-
Soils for Viticulture. Developed and published a national system that identifies restricted soil layers affecting root growth. Researchers and grape growers have used it successfully to relate rootstock performance to soil properties and deliver soil-specific packages for land development and soil management.
-
Forestry and water quality. Strategies for evaluating soil types to improve commercial afforestation have been developed. New methods to ameliorate soils in reservoir catchments for Water Supply Authorities have also been developed to overcome contaminants (dissolved organic carbon loads, salt, iron and manganese), and to plan land management.
Publication Metrics
I am author of 1,530 scientific publications, including editor/co-editor of 13 books, Monographs and Conference Proceedings with:
- Career citations of 10,593 (h-index of 53): with 4048 citations over the past 5 years, which demonstrates continued impact.
- 4 papers exceeding 400 citations with 17 exceeding 100 citations: 40 exceeding 50 citations, 120 exceeding 20 citations.
