Melissa Middeldorp
Adelaide Medical School
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD - email supervisor to discuss availability.
Dr Middeldorp completed her PhD in May 2019, with a focus on risk factors for Atrial Fibrillation. She moved to the United States in July 2021 to undertake a postdoctoral fellowship at Cedar Sinai Medical Centre, Los Angeles and is currently at the University Medical Centre Groningen, Netherlands. In May 2022 she graduated with her Masters in Public Health at Harvard University.
Her research focus on the management of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with atrial fibrillation through individualised, structured clinics. Additionally, her research is focusing on the differences in outcomes between men and women with atrial fibrillation particularly outcomes, complications and treatment strategies.
Dr Middeldorp is a research scientist with a particular interest in:
1. Risk factors and the relationship with atrial fibrillation.
2. Gender differences in atrial fibrillation outcomes.
3. Ablation outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation.
AVAILABLE PROJECTS FOR HONOURS/PHD STUDENTS
Below is a list of several projects available within our group. This list is not exhaustive and any prospective students should contact Dr Middeldorp in the first instance:
1. Atrial Fibrillation and Risk Factor Clinics.
Investigating the role of dedicated risk factor clinics to manage patients individual risk factors to improve symptoms, reversal of the disease process and outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation.
2. Is There a Role that Gender Plays in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation.
There is much discrepancy in the role gender plays particularly regarding ablation outcomes. Currently we are running an ongoing registry of ablation patients to be able to distinguish if there is a difference and what particularly in the long term.
