I am a manufacturing engineer, scientist and teacher. I received my B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Huazhong University of Science & Technology in Wuhan, China. Subsequently, I started my global academic and industrial R&D career at universities and government laboratories in five countries on three continents, including Tianjin University in Tianjin, China; Kumamoto University in Kumamoto, Japan; Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, USA; the Australian National University in Canberra and James Cook University in Townsville, Australia; the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA; and A*STAR Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) in Singapore.
 
In 2018, I joined the University of Adelaide (UoA) as an Associate Professor in manufacturing in the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. As Faculty Research Theme Leader in Advanced Manufacturing (2019–2022) at UoA, I have played a leadership role in bringing engineers, physicists, materials/plant scientists, business experts, and clinicians across UoA, Flinders Uni and UniSA, DSTG, and key strategic industry partners together to increase manufacturing research capability. I’m currently leading multi-institutional projects on advanced manufacturing funded by Defence SA (2024–2025) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) (2025–2028).  I successfully co-chaired the 14th Asia Pacific Conference on Fracture & Strength (APCFS)–Materials and Mechanics Conference of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in Matsue, Japan in 2024; co-chaired the 13th APCFS/Structural Integrity and Failure (SIF) in Adelaide in 2022; and co-organised the 10th Virtual Australasian Congress on Applied Mechanics (ACAM) in 2021. Supported by the UoA Special Studies Program (SSP), I had my sabbatical at NIST in Gaithersburg, Maryland and Additive Manufacturing Institute of Science & Technology at the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky, USA in 2023. Funded by the New Colombo Plan (NCP) from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), I led the UoA team for Singapore Horizons: Advanced Manufacturing and Unique Cultures in 2023. Our team visited A*STAR SIMTech, the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Polytechnic, Delta Optics NanoFab, Delta Optics Plastics Lens Manufacturing, Amplus Communication, and Aliena in Singapore. In 2024, I led another UoA NCP team for Eyes on Japan: Advanced Manufacturing with Respect to Innovation, Sustainability, Resilience, Culture, and Tradition. Our team visited Kyushu, Kumamoto and Oita Universities; Nissan, Toyota, TOTO, and Nippon Steel; and Kitakyushu Eco-Town in Japan.
 
My awards and honours include the JSPS Invitation Fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Japanese Government Scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan. I am proud of being a supervisor for a PhD Thesis cum laude with a Medal of Excellence awarded by James Cook University in 2017 and a supervisor for a Best Honours Project in Mechanical Engineering at Ingenuity awarded by the University of Adelaide in 2023.
 
Available projects for PhD students in 2025 include:
 
 1. Develop ultrasonic-vibration assisted manufacturing (UVAM) techniques for multilayer zirconia restorations and discover the fatigue behaviour of the UVAM-processed restorations (supported by the NHMRC Ideas Grants);
 
 2. Establish micro-CT based non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for structural integrity of UVAM processed multilayer zirconia restorations under the supervision (supported by the NHMRC Ideas Grants);
 
3. Build a micro-CT based computational model for failure prediction of multilayer zirconia restorations based on Interfacial Fracture Mechanics approaches (supported by the NHMRC Ideas Grants).

My research focuses on manufacturing and mechanical characterization of advanced materials. These materials have applications in optics, semiconductors, mechanical structures, dental restorations, osteoporosis/osteoarthritis studies, and marine/animal sciences. Much of my research involves collaborations with scholars or practitioners in physics, materials science, dentistry, anatomy, orthopedic surgery, tribology, and zoology. I have published some 100 refereed journal papers and ten book chapters, and produced three patents and a dozen industrial project reports. My publications can be viewed at Google Scholar or Scopus .  I have also given over 60 conference presentations and delivered more than 50 industrial consortia, public seminars and academic outreaches worldwide. 

I am a senior member of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution (NAMRI) and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). I am also a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Optical Society of America (OSA), American Ceramic Society (Acers), ASM International (ASM), and the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
