Associate Professor Dr Lawrie McArthur (FRACGP, PhD) brings a uniquely integrated profile as a rural based clinician, teacher, leader, manager, researcher, developer, and rural advocate. Through the years of working in rural Australia and overseas in developing countries, (Somalia, Nepal) as a GP obstetrician/anaesthetist/rural generalist, Lawrie has been challenged and inspired to develop sustainable, community focused, delivery of appropriate medical care. He has extensive experience in executive leadership, medical education and research teams across the continuum of undergraduate, prevocational medical and postgraduate GP training. He has held positions in medical education and leadership with Adelaide to Outback GP training, Adelaide Rural Clinical School, James Cook University medical school and JCUGP post graduate GP training. He has supported numerous AGPT academic registrar trainees over the last 15 years in South Australia and Queensland. His current work with Adelaide Medical School involves driving a greater emphasis on Primary Health Care in the medical curriculum, greater focus on General Practice in the integrated courses/syllabus and earlier and longer GP clinical placements in the new MD medical degree. This includes teaching General Practice and Rural Generalism, General Practice educational evaluation and supervision of early career academic GP's, Masters and PhD students.His research areas of interest include clinical reasoning, quality use of medications, curriculum design, competency based medical education, assessment and the professional development of clinical supervisors/teachers. His PhD focus was the development of self-efficacy in clinical teachers in Australian general practice, that led to the development of Self Efficacy in Clinical Teaching (SECT) measurement tool and an innovative intervention using mental imagery to develop self-efficacy. He is passionate about clinical teaching, social equity, rural medicine and global health. Currently he also parttime employed as the RACGP National Lead Medical Educator in Training Pipelines across Australia, providing strategic guidance and facilitation on positive elements across all stages of the medical training journey to create a sustainable GP clinical workforce serving communities in need. His wider professional involvement involvements include Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Interserve and Intermed.
