My doctoral research concerns identifying and analysing the tonal idiom(s) present in the styles of various contemporary Japanese composers, specifically in the solo studio works of Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023). The goal of this project is to shed some more light on stylistic elements in contemporary Japanese music composition ("Yogaku" as per Galliano, 2002) post-Toru Takemitsu, and to help expand the English-language academic literature in this space.
