Professor Williams is an international leader in domestic animal genomics, with specific areas of expertise in genome structure, epigenetics, functional genomics and molecular genetics applied to animal breeding. He is the inaugural Director of the Davies Research Centre, which is focused on the improvement of livestock animals. He collaborates extensively with researchers internationally and works closely with industry to ensure effective knowledge transfer, translating research to applications.

My research uses the latest technologies to create knowledge of genome structure and function, and I use this knowledge to understand the molecular basis of phenotypic variation.  I was a member of the international bovine genome project steering committee which delivered the first bovine genome sequence and the single nucleotide polymorphism panel, which was necessary to introduce genomic selection that has revolutionised livestock breeding. I have recently published the first haplotype-resolved chromosome-level sequences of the two cattle subspecies, Bos taurus and Bos indicus, though the development of a novel “Trio-binning” approach, which has now been adopted as the "gold standard" approach by the Vertebrate Genome Project. I also instigated and led international buffalo genomics consortium, attracting participation from every continent. We have recently published a chromosome level buffalo sequence, developed and commercialised a buffalo SNP panel and used this to explore global genetic diversity of buffalo species.

I am using these high quality reference genome sequences to study the transcriptome and the epigenetic regulation of gene expression, and genetic diversity of cattle. This basic genomic knowledge is used to understand biological variation that has relevance to the livestock industry, such as adaptation to environmental stress.  I am also exploring the expression and imprinting of the sex chromosomes and the role of parent-of-origin allele specific expression in controlling in phenotypic variation.

My current research includes projects on the genetic and environmental control of the range microorganisms making up the rumen microbiome, and implications for long term animal health and efficacy of production.  I am involved in projects to develop rapid point diagnostic assay and to identify biomarkers e.g. of stress in exhaled breath. I am also working with international collaborators on gene editing to understand gene function e.g. in the control of horn development.

I have been the coordinator of numerous multi-centre international projects including 8 European Union funded projects on topics including: the molecular genetics of embryo development and embryo-mother interactions affecting cattle fertility (FECUND); introduction of genomic selection to minor cattle breeds (Gene2Farm); identification of the genetics underlying difference in meat quality (GEMQUAL); early molecular events in mycobacterial infection (MACROSYS) and the genetics of susceptibility to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BEST-TEST). 

I set up a spin-off DNA analysis company, Rosgen LTD in Scotland, and created and managed a genomics service laboratory in Italy (GeneHome).  I also led the set-up of an European subsidiary (FlowMetric Europe) of a US contract service laboratory, and was the inaugural Chief Scientific Officer.
