I have a long-standing track record in the field of biomaterials interrface science. I hold the position of Research Leader and Emeritus Professor, having also been Director of the Mawson Institute until late 2015. I have applied my materials science expertise to research at the interface between materials and biological systems (“biomaterials interface science”) for 28 years. I have specialised in strategies utilising surface modification and coating technologies for modifying existing materials and biomedical devices to improve bio-interfacial responses for various applications in human health care and biotechnology. I am also known internationally for work on the development and application of modern physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods for the characterization and mechanistic molecular understanding of biomaterials surfaces and their interfacial interactions with proteins, cells and bacteria. In recent years rationally designed thin coatings to prevent the attachment and biofilm formation of bacteria and fungi have been a major focus of my group’s research efforts. Of particular interest is the question how bacterial and fungal cells interact with antibiotics bound onto solid materials surfaces.
I have also established a solid reputation for effectiveness in translating research outcomes to products. My most notable achievement was my major role in the development of the first viable extended-wear contact lens, Ciba Vision Focus Night&Day, which has enjoyed enormous commercial success. I am a co-inventor on 21 distinct patents. My contributions to the biomaterials field have led to nominations to honorary positions such as President of the Australian Society for Biomaterials for the years 2000, 2001, and 2003, Division Chair of the Biomaterials Interfaces Division of the US AVS Technology Society in 2004, and appointments as Visiting Professor at UNSW and at the ETH Zürich, Switzerland.
