Dr Eugene Roscioli is a medical biotechnologist and Principal Investigator at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the University of Adelaide (Lung Research Laboratory), leading a translational research program to develop next-generation antibiotic derivatives that overcome off-target cellular effects and mitigate the selection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

An expert in aberrant biochemical processes that underpin chronic respiratory disease, Dr Roscioli specialises in identifying, modelling and therapeutically targeting the complex interface between clinical need and molecular pathology. His laboratory has pioneered and patented human-relevant models for respiratory disease and characterised mechanisms by which azithromycin suppresses autophagy and promotes intracellular bacterial persistence. These insights have directly informed the rational design of non-antibiotic macrolide derivatives with preserved immunomodulatory effects.

His group’s research is positioned at the intersection of three World Health Organization priorities:

  1. Deciphering pathological drivers of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—a condition projected to become the leading global cause of death by 2030
  2. Overcoming Haemophilus influenzae colonisation and persistence in damaged airway epithelia
  3. Correcting off-target cellular effects of widely prescribed macrolide antibiotics to reduce the burden of antimicrobial resistance

Dr Roscioli has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Asia-Pacific Respiratory Society Investigator of the Year and several Research Fellowships. He has attracted significant external research funding, and maintains active international collaborations across Japan, Sweden, and the United States.
