Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD (as Co-Supervisor) - email supervisor to discuss availability.

Dr Eugene Roscioli is the Mary Overton Research Fellow for the Royal Adelaide Hospital's Department of Thoracic Medicine, and Senior Lecturer for the University of Adelaide. His current focus is identifying and therapeutically targeting dysregulated autophagy (cellular recycling) in the airways afflicted by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He examines the contribution of the airway epithelium and macrophages in the context of respiratory disease, and has developed specialist skills in the generation of disease-models of the human  airway.

Success with this research trajectory is evidenced by the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) / AstraZeneca Pty Ltd Respiratory ECR Fellowship Award, Cat 1 HNMRC clinical project grant funding, and his recently awarded Mary Overton Fellowship. Further, Dr Roscioli is Deputy Editor for SpringerNature's Journal of Inflammopharmacology.

With his research team, Dr Roscioli has shown that epithelial and macrophage-targeted therapies including macrolide antibiotics have properties that restore airway function in this context, in addition to combatting microbial infection by Nontypeable haemophilus influenza (NTHi) which is responsible for approximately 50% of all COPD exacerbations. He is currently investigating the efficacy of these and related therapeutics in combination with agents that restore autophagy, to holding back the growing and devastating global effects of COPD which is the third leading cause of death.
