Dr Esma Doğramacı's research themes encompass evidence-based dentistry, aetiology of malocclusion, epidemiology, basic sciences, patient-centred information translation, and clinically translatable research. Her research methods include systematic reviews/meta-analyses, original research using 3D diagnostic imaging (CBCT), laboratory-based methods and longitudinal studies, and she additionally publishes clinical case reports.

Her research is recognised internationally, with numerous invites to lecture locally, nationally and internationally.

By applying the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and using only the best available evidence, the research team she led discovered that those with an increased overjet (distance between top and bottom front teeth) have significantly higher risk of dental trauma. This work is published in the internationally respected Dental Traumatology journal and has an Altmetric attention score of 57, placing it as the highest ranked article published in this journal to date. It is in the top 3% of all research outputs tracked by Altmetric.

Her research into non-nutritive sucking behaviours and malocclusions was published as the cover story of the December 2016 issue of the prestigious Journal of the American Dental Association. The follow-up article, the most up-to-date into breastfeeding and malocclusions, was also published in the Journal of the American Dental Association and reached a maximum Altmetric attention score of 26, placing it in the top 5% of research outputs ever tracked by Altmetric (which is in excess of 11.5 million papers). This is a measure of the quality and quantity of online attention this research article has received from health care practitioners, scientists and members of the public.

Recently, her research into the long-term outcomes of orthodontics showed that orthodontic treatment does not prevent decay in later life. This important work was covered by the local and international media including The Advertiser,  The Daily TelegraphScimex, Dental Tribune International, Bite , the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as non-English language press. This research gained an Altmetric attention score of 58, also placing it in the top 5% of all research outputs tracked by Altmetric. A video of the research is available here and on YouTube.
