Associate Professor Edoardo Aromataris is a proponent for the use of available research evidence to inform clinical practice and policy decisions in health care, and the research that underpins this best practice. To this end, Edoardo has a keen interest in the best-practice conduct and reporting of evidence syntheses, including diverse types of systematic reviews, as well as practices central to their publication. He is the Director of Synthesis Science at JBI and the lead of the contract and consultant research program for JBI in the School of Public Health at The University of Adelaide; he is the founding Editor-in-Chief of JBI Evidence Synthesis and the co-Deputy Director of the JBI Adelaide GRADE Centre.

Well conducted systematic reviews are recognised as fundamental in the knowledge translation cycle to promote and ensure the continued trajectory of trustworthy evidence to end users. Edoardo is committed to furthering the development and understanding of methodology and methods for evidence synthesis. In the role of Director of Synthesis Science for JBI, as a part of the organisation’s broader program of evidence-based healthcare research, Edoardo has overseen the expansion of the organisation’s international program of systematic review methodological development, which he initiated in 2011. He is the founding chair and current vice-Chair of the international JBI Scientific Committee and active contributor to the development of multiple diverse methodologies of synthesis. He has previously led and convened active JBI methodology groups focussed on methods for reviews of effects, umbrella reviews and reviews of aetiology and risk factors. He is editor of the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis – a recognised, practical, resource for evidence synthesists around the globe. He is a member of the GRADE working group and multiple project groups. He has authored and co-authored over 160 peer reviewed papers, book chapters and reports.

Alongside active investment in the development of methodology and methods of synthesis, Edoardo also applies his research towards the improvement of health outcomes, practices and policies both nationally and internationally. A/Prof Aromataris is a sought-after expert in the conduct of systematic reviews. In his role as the lead of the contract and consultant research program for JBI he has accumulated extensive experience working with both government and non-government agencies to promote and aid these organisations to use evidence to inform their decision making. He has led projects working collaboratively with Cancer Australia, The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Victorian Government, NSW Department of Health, Queensland Health, the National Heart Foundation of Australia, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and many others. He has been among CI teams for nationally competitive grants for the Centre of Research Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Chronic Disease Knowledge Translation and Exchange (NHMRC CREATE), and multiple projects supported by the HCF Medical Research Foundation and the Stillbirth Foundation of Australia.

A/Prof Aromataris also has a well-developed interest in publishing and publication ethics. He created and launched JBI’s first society journal, JBI Evidence Synthesis, as the principal outlet for systematic reviews and scoping reviews to directly inform health practice, as well as future health research. Originally published by The University of Adelaide, the journal has been published by Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams and Wilkins since 2016. Since its inception at the end of 2012, the online journal has evolved into one of the leading international periodicals for the publication of evidence syntheses and the latest developments in methodology related to evidence synthesis. During the course of leading the evolution of this successful journal, A/Prof Aromataris has developed research interests in best practice conduct and reporting of research, publication ethics, peer review practices, and also appropriate and informed research question development to alleviate research waste.
