I have over twenty years of experience working for mining academic institutions and the industry. My research interests cover many areas including geostatistics, mineral resource evaluation, risk assessment of mining project, optimisation of mining operations, rock fracture mechanics, stochastic rock fracture modelling, modelling of fluid flow, heat transfer and chemical reactions in fractured rock masses.

Some of my major research achievements include: 1). The development (together with Prof. P. Dowd) of a commercial software product, MINVEST, for financial evaluations and risk assessments of mining projects. MINVEST won the top prize of 1995 UK Business Software Challenge Competition (sponsored by Computer Associates plc, the Financial Times, ICL, the British Computer Society, the British Institute of Management, Coopers & Lybrand and the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists) and has now user licenses worldwide; 2). The development (together with Dr. R.J. Fowell and other colleagues) of CCNBD (Cracked Chevron-Notched Brazilian Disc) specimen for rock fracture toughness testing. The research was recognised by the Testing Commission of the ISRM (International Society for Rock Mechanics) and the CCNBD method was adopted as an ISRM international suggested method for the measurement of Mode I rock fracture toughness.

I have been working extensively in the past years on stochastic rock fracture modelling and has made some significant contributions to realistic fracture modelling of stimulated reservoirs and the associated performance assessments in terms of fluid flow and heat extraction. The freeware FracSim3D I have developed together with Prof. P.A.Dowd, which incorporates the new algorithms and methods developed over the years, has now hundreds of user licenses worldwide.
