Welcome to my homepage. I hold dual roles as a lecturer and research fellow in Clinical and Health Sciences. I teach across all undergraduate year levels, specialising in biochemistry. A passion for chemistry underpins my diverse portfolio of research activities, and reflects my curiosity and desire to understand the complexity of the natural world.
I am an integral member of the Population Health Chemistry group, which conducts research in the field of wastewater analysis with an emphasis on psychoactive drugs with potential to cause adverse physiological harm. This work focuses on developing new analytical methods for the detection of licit and illicit substances of either natural and synthetic origin, and reporting on routine monitoring of local and national wastewater samples.
My research on the ethnopharmacological use of plants and bioassay-guided identification of bioactive natural products spans over a decade. This community-led research involves integrating Aboriginal traditional knowledge and philosophy with western scientific methodologies as a means of generating innovative solutions to contemporary issues relevant to human health, while preventing further loss of traditional knowledge. I am a co-inventor of patents relating to the discovery of novel anti-inflammatory compounds, which subsequently influenced the recent reform of Queensland's Biodiscovery Act.

  • Wastewater analysis of licit, illicit and biomolecular substances for monitoring population health
  • Ethnopharmacological use of plants
  • Biochemical analysis of bioactive natural products from native food and medicinal plants
  • Ecological signficance of dioecious plants occuring in arid zone habitats
  • Mediterranean diet and physical activity to reduce systemic inflammation, promoting healthy aging
