My research has focused on the epidemiology and longitudinal course of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in relation to military personnel, emergency service personnel, disaster victims and other civilian accidents from a range of perspectives, including the longitudinal course, neurobiology and treatment outcomes. My research has also focused on the neuroimaging of the cognitive deficits in this disorder, together with the impact of traumatic stress on working memory and affect processing.
I established the MILHOP research program which is investigating the physical and mental health of all Australian veterans and serving members who have deployed to the Middle East area of Operations and was the Principal investigator of an epidemiological study of the mental health of the entire Australian Defence Force. I have been able to take on senior coordinating roles because I have significant responsibilities within the Australian Defence Force as an advisor and also as a senior advisor to the Department of Veterans' Affairs. I am currently an investigator of a major follow-up study of all recently discharged members of the Australian Defence Force from 2010 to 2015.
