Dr Susannah Emery
Lecturer
School of Communication, Media and Journalism
College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities
Susie (Susannah) (she/they, AuDHD) is a Senior Lecturer in Game Design and Digital Media at UniSA, and an interactive media designer and researcher working across games, digital systems, and emerging technologies. Her practice spans video games, tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), board and card games, as well as hybrid and non-game interactive experiences, including tools such as chatbots and participatory digital platforms.
Susie’s research explores how interactive media and technology can communicate complex ideas across cultural and social boundaries, with a focus on fostering learning, empathy, and social change. Their work is grounded in participatory and radical co-design approaches, collaborating with communities to design technologies that reflect lived experience and support community-defined goals. This includes working with marginalised groups to meaningfully shape the design process and to enable more equitable forms of knowledge production. A key strand of their work focuses on games as sites for social engagement and transformation. She examines how physical and analogue play spaces can support inclusive, community-driven experiences, and actively design and publish in the areas of TTRPGs, board games, and hybrid formats.
Susie’s work is particularly concerned with equity, diversity, and inclusion in technology and game cultures, including a focus on neurodivergence, disability, gender, and socio-economic inequality. As a neurodivergent designer and researcher, they bring lived experience into both their teaching and creative practice. Alongside their academic work, Susie has contributed as a designer across a range of projects spanning digital, physical, and hybrid formats, including award-winning and nominated games. They are an International Women in Games Ambassador, supporting women and non-binary people in exploring careers in game development. In 2022, Susie received the Women in Games Global Award for Games or Esports Educator.
