My research interests are in political theory, history of political thought and issues in electoral law and behaviour. My most recent work explores political exclusion and inclusion, voter behaviour and correlates of voter turnout and issues in liberal democracy. My other projects focus on the history of the western political tradition, political corruption, human rights and the Scottish Enlightenment.I welcome inquiries from Masters and PhD candidates interested in: The history of political thought, Thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment, Voting inclusion (particularly of the disadvantaged), Compulsory voting and informal voting, Political Corruption, Human Rights, Classical Stoicism and Epicureanism and Liberal democracy, its history, character and challenges.

Current projects include:

Assessing epistemic democracy: normative and applied perspectives

This project has three broad aims:

  • To test empirically the epistemic claim that high-turnout elections yield a) higher levels of ‘bad voting’, which in turn yield b) worse political outcomes than do low-turnout elections.
  • To use the findings of the applied study to explore and evaluate the normative implications and validity of epistemic democracy.
  • To assess whether or not voting in mass elections has a future. or whether we should cede more power to ‘the wise’.

Raising Voter Turnout Among People Experiencing Homelessness

We wish to explore how electoral commissions, academics, community sector organisations, and individuals with lived experience can work together to develop appropriate interventions and measures to identify the scope of non-voting among the homeless and to test and measure the effectiveness of potential remedies.
