Professor Brendan Jenkins completed his PhD studies at the Hanson Institute/University of Adelaide, before undertaking postdoctoral research at the world-renowned Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle (USA), and later the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Melbourne. In 2006, he established his own research group (Cancer and Immune Signalling Laboratory - CISL) at Hudson Institute of Medical Research, and in 2021 was appointed Director of the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases at the Hudson Institute. In 2023, he was recruited to join SAiGENCI (University of Adelaide) as Program Head of the Tumour Inflammation and Immunotherapy Program.
Over the last 2 decades Professor Jenkins has been at the forefront of research examining the roles that innate immune cytokines, proteases and pattern recognition receptors (such as Toll-like receptors) play in the most common and lethal inflammation-associated cancers in the world, namely lung, stomach (gastric) and pancreatic cancers. In addition, his multidisciplinary research team investigates the role that these innate immune regulators play in driving chronic inflammatory conditions, in particular gastritis, emphysema/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pancreatitis, which are also risk factors for the above-mentioned cancers.
Collectively, his research programs incorporate long-standing collaborations with basic scientific researchers, industry and clinicians, both nationwide and overseas (UK, Japan, Singapore, Europe). Amongst his scientific achievements are publications in the highest-ranking science and medical research journals, including Cancer Cell, Nature Medicine, Nature, Immunity, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Experimental Medicine, Gut, Oncogene, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, EMBO Molecular Medicine, Clinical Cancer Research and Cancer Research.
In recognition of his research achievements, Professor Jenkins has held numerous fellowships (NHMRC RD Wright Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, Monash University Fellowship, Sylvia and Charles Viertel Senior Medical Research Fellowship, multiple NHMRC Senior Research Fellowships). His outstanding contributions to the medical research field have also been recognised by receiving many national and international awards, including the Australian Institute for Policy and Science Tall Poppy Award, and very recently the Annual International Cytokine and Interferon Society Distinguished Service Award. In addition, he has been awarded multiple project grants within Australia (NHMRC, Cancer Council) and overseas (United States Department of Defense, Association for International Cancer Research), is a regular invited speaker at local and international scientific meetings, and serves (including as Chair) on numerous committees and boards.
