Dr Michael Evans is a senior lecturer of mechanical engineering at the University of South Australia and is the program director for the Master of Engineering (Engineering Management). Michael is a previous Endeavour Postgraduate Awardee (2015) and received the Bilger Early Career Researcher Award (2022) from the Australia & New Zealand Section of the The Combustion Institute for "outstanding research in experimental and computational combustion."
Some of Michael's current research interests are focussed on alternative fuels, including hydrogen; turbulence-chemistry interaction and detonation modelling; high pressure, low emissions combustion systems; high-speed reactive flows; two-phase liquid/vapour flows and efficient energy utilisation in HVAC and refrigeration. Michael's research is undertaken using numerical simulations on cluster computing systems and experimental techniques, including laser diagnostics.
Prior to joining UniSA, Michael was a research associate in the School of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Adelaide, where he finished his Ph.D. in 2017 and Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical and Aerospace) and Bachelor of Science (Theoretical and Experimental Physics) in 2013. Michael's Ph.D. research focussed on the differences in, and transition between, conventional and MILD (moderate or intense low oxygen dilution) combustion. Michael has undetaken research visits to the Politecnico di Milano in Italy and Stanford University in the United States of America.
Outside of the university environment, Michael has over ten years experience teaching swimming in paid and volunteer capacities, as both an instructor and instructor-in-charge. Between 2010 and 2015, in addition to working for a private swim-school, Michael worked as a swimming instructor and pool lifeguard in programmes tailored for adults with intellectual disabilities.
My research focuses on elements of: energy, hydrogen energy, combustion technologies, alternative fuels, high temperature processes, multiphase fluids, laser diagnostics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD, including model development), finite element analyses (FEA).
