I am a marine ecologist with particular interest in fish ecology, conservation and management. My research spans fish population connectivity, seafood provenance, including mislabeling and quality, and the impacts of emerging contaminants in marine ecosystems. I use chemical signatures and other natural tags stored in fish tissues to track migrations, reconstruct life histories, and assess the impacts of pollution and environmental changes on movement, growth, and recruitment. I also apply these approaches to support seafood provenance and sustainable seafood production. I have a strong interest in understanding the occurrence and effects of emerging contaminants, such as microplastics and pharmaceuticals on marine ecosystems, including from a seafood perspective. I am committed to supporting the conservation of critical habitats, advancing fisheries management, and developing solutions to mitigate plastic pollution, through collaboration with industry, government agencies, and active engagement and outreach.

Course Coordination
- Science International Study tour (Timor Leste): Marine Biology Winter School (2nd and 3rd year; 2025 - ), Co-Coordinator
This overseas course immerses students in the marine and coastal ecosystems of Timor-Leste, an island nation surrounded by coral reefs and rich marine biodiversity. The course combines academic, practical, and cultural learning, with students completing SCUBA training and undertaking coastal and underwater surveys of fish, seagrass, and plastic pollution. Students gain hands-on experience in species identification and marine monitoring methods, while developing cross-cultural understanding and teamwork. The course explores the complex interactions between conservation, food security, and ecotourism, with a focus on marine pollution, fisheries, and aquaculture in a developing nation context. In addition to on site activities, students complete pre-trip assignments, research blogs, on-site presentations, and post-trip video and written reports, emphasizing experiential learning, collaboration, cross-cultural engagement, and science communication.
- Frontiers in Marine Biology III (3rd year; 2020-2022), Co-Coordinator
The aim of this course was to provide an understanding of a wide range of relevant issues facing contemporary marine biology at local and global scales. The course encouraged students to read about the latest controversies and advances in theory and promote critical thinking through issues of conflicting and uncertain knowledge. The lectures were designed to expose students to a wide variety of topics in marine biology, with an emphasis on topical, ground-breaking, frontier science. This course was about contemporary frontiers in marine biology, and included invited lectures by researchers who were actively pushing these boundaries including from government and industry. The course also comprised several tutorials related to key writing and presentation skills relevant to the course's four main assessments (Review paper; Popular article e.g., in the style of Conversation article; Research proposal; Seminar).
