As a leader of the Cognitive Genomics research group, I investigate the molecular underpinnings of cognitive functioning in healthy individuals as well as in people with psychiatric disorders. My current work is focused on examining the genome-informed structure of cognitive functioning to develop biology-based assessment tools for cognitive functioning in high-performance occupations. I'm also interested in understanding what genes play a role in major depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, to what extent they overlap with cognitive functioning, and how the interaction between these genes affects biological pathways implicated in these psychiatric conditions. In particular, I'm interested in utilising integrative approaches allowing to bridge multiple levels of -omics abstraction with clinical data.  This may provide new insights into the pathophysiology of psychiatric conditions and cognition, identify clinically relevant biological markers of disease and suggest novel therapeutic targets. I use next‐generation sequencing (NGS) and a range of statistical and bioinformatics techniques from classical candidate gene association analysis to genome-wide network approach and machine learning.
