John Baranoff

Dr John Baranoff

Senior Lecturer

School of Psychology

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

Eligible to supervise Masters and PhD (as Co-Supervisor) - email supervisor to discuss availability.

I am currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology.

My previous role was as a Senior Clinical Psychologist and Team Manager of the Centre of the Treatment of Anxiety and Depression, and Titleholder/Clinical Senior Lecturer at The University of Adelaide. I also held the role of Senior Performance Psychologist with the Australian Institute of Sport for approximately 8 years and as a psychologist wiithin a multi-disciplinary pain team for over 10 years.

I have been involved in teaching, research and clinical supervision, and clinical practice across a range of settings.

I have a wide range of experience in adolescent and adult mental health in both public and private settings. My recent clinic work has focused on the treatment of chronic anxiety and depression, as well as individuals who have anxiety about health. I primarily use a cognitive behavioural framework and I have training in acceptance and commitment therapy, and I am an accredited schema therapist.

In terms of research, I have published work in the area of assessment of schema and the contribution of cognitive-content specificity to cognitive assessment. I have also published a number of studies in the area of acceptance-based interventions for health conditions and chronic pain.

My research interests can be categorised into three broad areas that are described below. I am primarily interested in research that informs clinical practice in psychology and/or projects that address research questions that have, in part, arisen from clinical practice.

Cognitive behavioural therapy for Anxiety and Mood Disorders

I have been involved in research relating to anxiety as well as the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and depressive symptoms, and the role of health anxiety in health-related internet use. I have been involved in the development and implementation of a cognitive behavioural stress management group conducted as part of an RCT with an aim to assess the benefit of adding cognitive behavioural stress management to standard forms of weight loss.

Current student projects relate to obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders and interventions for music performance anxiety.

Persistent Pain

I have conducted a series of studies relating to the assessment of processes of change that may lead to clinically relevant outcomes for people with persistent pain following various forms of cognitive behavioural therapy. I am involved in ongoing projects that relate to the psychological treatment of pelvic pain and opioid misuse in the context of pain treatment.

Sport Injury Rehabilitation

I have been involved in the development of group interventions based on acceptance and commitment therapy for athletes undergoing long term rehabilitation. I am currently involved in research assessing the utility of the fear of avoidance model to explain patterns of behaviour among athletes with post-concussion conditions.
