Dr Sivabaskari (Tharshy) Pasupathy is a research-only academic at the University of Adelaide, where she has developed a growing and internationally recognised research program focused on Non-Obstructive Coronary Artery (NOCA) syndromes. These include MINOCA (Myocardial Infarction with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries) and INOCA (Ischaemia with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries), conditions characterised by debilitating symptoms and diagnostic uncertainty despite the absence of significant coronary artery obstruction.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in 2011 and completed her PhD in Medicine at the University of Adelaide (2012–2016). Since then, she has continued her academic career at the University, based at the Translational Vascular Function Research Collaborative at the Basil Hetzel Institute. Her research is both independent and collaborative, with an emphasis on improving diagnostic precision and therapeutic approaches in NOCA syndromes.
Research Vision
Dr Pasupathy’s overarching research vision is to advance the diagnosis, characterisation, and treatment of Non-Obstructive Coronary Artery (NOCA) syndromes—a group of conditions that includes MINOCA (Myocardial Infarction with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries) and INOCA (Ischaemia with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries). These syndromes remain under-recognised, poorly understood, and often inadequately managed within conventional cardiology practice. Her research seeks to address this critical gap by reframing NOCA as an area of focused scientific inquiry. Through translational and clinical research, Dr Pasupathy aims to improve diagnostic precision, identify pathophysiological mechanisms, and inform therapeutic strategies, ultimately driving better outcomes for a patient population frequently overlooked in mainstream cardiovascular care.
Dr Pasupathy has authored several peer-reviewed publications. Her body of work includes invited editorials and reviews, and her research has been cited more than 3,000 times.
Despite not having formal clinical training in cardiology, Dr Pasupathy has made foundational academic contributions to the field. Her PhD led to a landmark publication - now cited over 1,000 times - that helped define the concept of MINOCA. Her subsequent research has contributed directly to the international recognition of MINOCA, including its inclusion in the 2018 Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction, the adoption of formal disease classification codes (2023), and its designation as a Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) on PubMed (2024).
She was the first author of a late-breaking clinical trial and delivered a prestigious Hotline presentation at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress.
Dr Pasupathy continues to lead and contribute to research that bridges translational science and clinical cardiology, with the goal of advancing care for patients often overlooked by conventional diagnostic frameworks.
