Professor Zonghan Xie grew up in Huaibei, a small town of Anhui Province in eastern China. He studied Metallic Materials and Heat Treatment at Northeastern University (东北大学) and Metal Matrix Composites at Southeast University (东南大学), both in China. In 2004 Dr Xie received his PhD (Technical Ceramics) from the University of NSW (UNSW), supported by the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) program of the Australian Government. In the same year, he was awarded the Australian Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Australian Research Council (ARC) to investigate metallurgical coatings in partnership with CSIRO Thin Films group at Lindfield, Sydney. Later Dr Xie worked as a research fellow at both the University of Sydney Dental School and the Centre for Integrated Nanotechnologies of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM, USA before returning to Australia in 2008 to establish and lead a materials and surface research group at ECU, WA. He joined the University of Adelaide July 2012 and has served as Associate Dean (International) with the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences. He is currently leading the development of strategic partnerships with universities and research institutions in East and North Asia, including China, Japan and Korea.

Deformation and fracture of structural materials over multiple length scales 

Wear and corrosion of engineering materials, including thin films and coatings

Materials characterization techniques: Nanoindentation, electron microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and u-CT

First-principles calculations and finite element modelling of material behaviors
