Yuan Chai is a PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide. Her research topic is "Complex Systems of Disaster Response”. Until now, there has not been a particularly effective approach to managing disasters, and we have primarily relied on storing information and experiences from each disaster event. However, the frequent incidence of disasters not only jeopardizes national or urban security but also entails substantial resource consumption. Consequently, there has been ongoing research in this area in academia and practical application. It is evident that disaster response constitutes a complex process involving all residents in the affected area, coordination of various functions within government, healthcare management, and the involvement of social organizations. This represents a significant disaster response undertaking and a vast system where each component is pivotal to the overall success or failure of the response effort. The primary focus of her research is to establish a practical methodology that enables countries or cities to respond to disasters more flexibly and efficiently, thus enhancing citizen safety and national/urban security to a greater extent.
Her research interests include Complex Systems, Systems Thinking, Disaster Response, Complexity Science, Risk Control/Management, and Emergency Management.
She has authored several research papers closely aligned with her research, including:
1. ”Complex Systems of Disaster Response: The Case of COVID-19“
2. “Smart Cities, Resilient Cities and Sustainable Cities, a New Triangular Stable City Model Built”
3. “A Preliminary Study of System Dynamics Models for Resilient and Smart Cities”
4. “Analysis of Disaster Response System Frameworks”
5. “Disaster Response Review: System Thinking in Disaster Response”
