Professor You-il Lee is Professor of International Business in the School of Management, College of Business and Law, Adelaide University. He provides academic leadership across international business, management, and multidisciplinary business education, with a strong commitment to curriculum innovation, international engagement, industry collaboration, and experiential learning.
Professor Lee's research focuses on international business, comparative political economy, and geoeconomics, with particular expertise in foreign direct investment (FDI), state–market relations, East Asian capitalism, and Australia's economic engagement with Asia. Drawing on institutional and comparative political economy perspectives, his research examines how governments, multinational enterprises, and international investment shape industrial development, economic transformation, and regional integration, with a particular focus on the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region.
He has published extensively in leading international journals and with major academic publishers. His authored and co-authored Routledge research monographs include The Political Economy of Foreign Direct Investment in Korea: Evolution, Dynamics and Contradictions (2025), Cross-Cultural Challenges of Managing "One Belt One Road" Projects (2022), The Korean Economy: From Growth to Maturity (2019), and The Political Economy of New Regionalism in Northeast Asia (2018). Building on this programme of research, his latest sole-authored research monograph, Geoeconomics and East Asian Capitalism: Foreign Direct Investment in Korea and China, is under contract with Routledge and will be published in the Frontiers of Geoeconomics, Geopolitics and Sustainability book series.
Professor Lee has led and contributed to externally funded research projects and international partnerships and has played a significant role in academic leadership, curriculum reform, accreditation, and quality assurance.
