Yi is a Senior Research Fellow in Sustainable Agriculture at the School of Agriculture, Food & Wine. He completed both his Master's degree and PhD at the University of Queensland in 2013. His research spans various fields within agricultural and plant sciences, including physiology of broadacre and horticultural crops, dryland farming systems, plant-microbe interactions, soil microbiomes, breeding of perennial grasses, and genomics of Australian native plants.
My research focus on promoting sustainable agriculture by reducing chemical inputs through biological and ecological strategies. It encompasses four main areas:
1, Enhancing nitrogen fixation in legume plants: This includes developing novel rhizobial strains and inoculant products to boost nitrogen fixation efficiency, developing novel pasture legume species resilient to climate change in low-rainfall regions, and evaluating genetic variation in legume crops for nitrogen fixation capacity and soil nitrogen uptake plasticity.
2, Improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in Australian dryland cropping systems: This involves evaluating the impacts of fertilisation, tillage, stubble retention, and crop rotation practices on crop canopy development and senescence, aiming to identify crop ideotypes for NUE.
3, Developing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria: Using Australia’s unique soil microbiome, we have isolated over 2,000 beneficial microbial strains. The goal is to develop inoculation technologies that enhance crop productivity and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses in cereal and legume systems.
4, Breeding perennial grasses for improved water and nutrient use efficiency: This component focuses on collecting naturalised and native germplasm across Australia, screening for abiotic stress tolerance, and conducting genomic analyses to explore the underlying mechanisms and evolutionary processes.
