Dr Xiaoguang Duan is a Full Professor and ARC Future Fellow (2024–2028) in the School of Chemical Engineering at Adelaide University. He leads research at the interface of environmental chemistry, catalysis, and functional materials, with a particular focus on sustainable technologies for water purification, pollutant transformation, waste valorisation, and solar-to-chemical conversion.
His research has made important contributions to green catalytic chemistry, including metal-free catalysis, advanced oxidation processes, single-atom catalysis, and the upcycling of wastes and pollutants into value-added products. These studies have opened new directions for addressing emerging environmental challenges such as pharmaceuticals, microplastics, PFAS, and complex industrial wastewater.
Xiaoguang has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, including >80 Highly Cited Papers, in leading journals such as Nature Water, Nature Sustainability, Chemical Reviews, Chemical Society Reviews, Accounts of Chemical Research, Advanced Materials, Angewandte Chemie, PNAS, Matter, Nature Communications, and Environmental Science & Technology. His publications have received over 50,000 citations, with an h-index of 122 in Web of Science and 126 in Google Scholar.
He serves in editorial and advisory roles for numerous international journals, including Applied Catalysis B: Environment and Energy, Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, npj Materials Sustainability, Biochar, Journal of Materials Chemistry A, ACS ES&T Engineering, Environmental Science & Technology, and Chemical Engineering Journal.
Xiaoguang has secured more than A$6 million in competitive funding from the Australian Research Council and other major sources, including an ARC DECRA Fellowship, ARC Future Fellowship, Discovery Projects, LIEF, and Linkage funding, together with major national research infrastructure support through the Australian Synchrotron and the National Computational Infrastructure.
His research excellence has been recognised by awards including the MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 Asia Pacific, the ES&T James J. Morgan Award, the AIPS Young Tall Poppy Science Award, and repeated recognition as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher.
Xiaoguang's research focuses on advancing innovative chemical, materials, and environmental engineering for the design and scalable synthesis of low-cost functional nanomaterials, and for their applications in environmental remediation, clean manufacturing, solar fuels, emission reduction, waste-to-resource conversion, water purification, and catalytic biomedical technologies.
Xiaoguang is particularly interested in developing sustainable catalytic systems that address major environmental and energy challenges, including the conversion of CH₄ and CO₂, advanced water treatment, pollutant transformation, and the valorisation of waste materials such as biomass, plastics, and tyres.
