I’m a PhD researcher in a joint PhD program between Adelaide University and the University of Copenhagen. I'm interested in macroecology and biogeography and my current research is about range and population dynamics of birds in Europe over the past few decades. I draw on community and population ecology, species distribution modelling / simulation-based approaches and extensive historical surveys of species distributions to examine how range and population dynamics relate to climate, habitat and species’ characteristics. By comparing patterns across species, places and time, I aim to better understand why birds respond differently to environmental change and what this means for biodiversity conservation.
I’m a quantitative ecologist and PhD researcher studying how and why bird distributions and populations change across Europe. I combine repeated bird atlas surveys, population monitoring data and ecological modelling to investigate how responses to environmental change vary across species, places and time, with a particular interest in climate, habitat, species’ traits and population processes.
My background spans ecology, remote sensing and machine learning. At the University of Amsterdam’s Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED), I modelled fine-scale bird distributions with satellite imagery, environmental indices and species distribution models. Through the ATRAP project at the the Royal Museum for Central Africa, Tervuren, I worked on deep learning for identifying medically relevant snails from citizen-science photographs. Here, I generated 'fake' images of snails in Python to train a deep-learning model to identify and classify snails up to the genus-level, from images taken in the field. These projects developed my technical skills in spatial analysis, image processing, programming and high-performance computing.
Alongside my research, I have worked as a research assistant and taught on courses at both BSc and MSc levels, gaining experience in supporting students and explaining ecological concepts and quantitative methods. I have also presented talks and posters at conferences and symposia.
