Dr Thao Nguyen is a Senior Lecturer in Dentistry and Oral Health, and a senior researcher in Molecular Diagnostics, Genomics, Bioinformatics and Precision Medicine. Her work advances disease diagnosis, prognostication and personalised treatment through the integration of molecular biology, genomic technologies and translational research. A former NHMRC Peter Doherty Early Career Research Fellow, Research Fellow at the Centre for Cancer Biology, and Research Fellow at the Centre for Pharmaceutical Innovation, she leads collaborative research spanning cancer genomics, molecular diagnostics, host-microbiome interactions, oral health, infectious diseases, and biomarker-guided therapeutics. Recognised for her success in securing competitive research funding and fostering multidisciplinary collaborations, Dr Nguyen's research bridges discovery science and clinical application to deliver innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies that improve patient outcomes and advance precision healthcare.

My research aims to improve disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment through the application of molecular diagnostics, genomics, bioinformatics, and precision medicine. Drawing on expertise in stem cell biology, haematopoiesis, immunology and targeted therapeutics, I investigate molecular mechanisms and biomarkers that drive cancer, oral diseases, and infectious diseases. Current projects focus on targeted therapy in haematological malignancies, host-microbiome interactions in oral health, and the development of biomarker-informed therapeutic approaches, including nanomedicine-based drug delivery systems. By integrating laboratory discovery, clinical research, and emerging genomic technologies, my goal is to develop clinically translatable solutions that improve patient outcomes and support the delivery of precision healthcare.

My current research projects:
Nanomedicine-based approaches to treat acute myeloid leukaemia (CIA: Dr Thao Nguyen, CIB: Prof Clive Prestidge)
Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is an aggressive blood cancer that kills 75% of patients. This project is the first to employ nanomedicine approaches targeting sphingosine kinase 1 pro-survival signalling to eradicate AML relapse driving cancer stem cells, as both a monotherapy and/or in combination with clinically-relevant targeted therapy Venetoclax. Successful outcomes will accelerate the translation of these nanomedicine approaches into clinical trials for AML therapy and potentially cure many patients.

Previous research projects:
  1. Understanding the biological mechanisms involved in treatment free remission of myeloid leukaemia. NHMRC Fellowship. (CI: Dr Thao Nguyen)
  2. Employing humanised xenotransplantation models of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) to predict patient outcome and direct therapy. NHMRC Ideas Grant. (CIA Prof Stuart Pitson, CIB A/Prof Daniel Thomas, AI: Dr Thao Nguyen)
  3. The role of ephrinB1 reverse signalling in osteogenic differentiation and haematopoietic stem cell maintenance. NHMRC Project Grant. (CIA Prof Stan Gronthos, CIB Dr Agnes Arthur, AI: Dr Thao Nguyen)
