A major focus of Dr Soenen’s research relates to the effects of nutrients, particularly protein, on appetite regulation and underlying gastrointestinal mechanisms in the elderly. He postulates that various inter-related gut mechanisms underpin the regulation of energy intake by nutrient ingestion, and that these will be disordered in older people, particularly those who are malnourished (obese or undernourished). His recent work has established for the first time that suppression of energy intake by protein is less in healthy older than young adults. This information is of fundamental significance to the rational, and optimal, use of energy restricted diets with increased protein content by obese elderly, protein-rich supplements by undernourished elderly, and protein-rich tube feeds by hospitalized elderly patients at the intensive care unit.
