Stewart is a cereals pre-breeder with interest in the genetics and physiological basis of adaptation to hostile environments and barley malting quality.

Stewart is a research associate with experience in plant breeding and genetics, appointed as a barley breeding in 2004 and involved in the release of the barley varieties Compass, Commander, Fathom, Fleet, Skipper, Navigator, and Admiral through the University of Adelaide Barley Program. Since 2016 I have been appointed as a germplasm manager and cereals pre-breeder for the University of Adelaide. Stewart is actively engaged with the barley industry with the promotion of barley varieties and is on organising committee of the Australian Barley Technical Symposium and a member of the South Australian Barley Advisory Committee.

I have been a cosupervisor for a student investigating the basis for the 10% yield gap between Commander and Compass and an honours student. I have been actively involved in supporting many PhD and Honours students in their projects with advice, training, and support.
