Assciate Professor Sophie Karanicolas is the current Assistant Dean for Learning and Teaching in the School of Dentistry and Academic Lead for Innovation and Staff Development. Sophie is an Education Specialist in the Adelaide Education Academy and facilitates the largest Community of Practice in the university on Flipped Classrooms. She is a Flipped Global Ambassador as a part of the Flipped Learning Global Initiative and has jointly lead a national Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) flipped classroom project, "Translating Concept to Practice".Sophie is also a member of the development team for the first MOOC (external link)(Massive Open Online Course), developed by the University of Adelaide: An Introduction to Essential Human Biology. She is actively invloved in the mentoring of colleagues and has been a part of a team which has developed, implemented and evaluated a colleague development program referred to as Becoming an Effective Supervisor and Teacher (BEST).Sophie is also the Chair of the College of Oral Health Academics (COHA), a national body exploring oral health education and a part of the Australian Dental Council Site Evaluation Teams.

Adjunct Associate Professor Sophie Karanicolas has an affiliate role in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. Her research focussed on exploring student centred pedagogies which included flipped classrooms, student as co-creators and was an early adopter and researcher in the area of technology enhanced learning.
