Simon Cottrell is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at Adelaide University’s School of Accounting and Finance. He is also a member of the Centre for Markets, Values and Inclusion (CMVI) and an allied member of the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA).
Prior to joining Adelaide University, Simon held academic positions at several Australian universities, where he coordinated undergraduate and postgraduate courses in corporate finance and financial markets, including at Flinders University and Federation University Australia. He has also delivered online MBA courses in finance and economics to students globally. He is recognised for his clear and applied teaching style, with a strong focus on linking theory to real world financial markets.
Before entering academia, Simon worked in the treasury division of an Australian commercial bank, where he managed interest rate risk, balance sheet liquidity, and regulatory capital. He was involved in capital management planning, wholesale funding programs, and the execution of cross currency and interest rate swap strategies. This industry experience informs both his teaching and research.
Simon’s research focuses on banking stability, regulatory capital, and financial market functioning, with particular emphasis on US Treasury markets, wholesale funding markets, and credit default swap pricing. His work has been published in leading journals, including Journal of Banking & Finance and Energy Economics. He is also a regular contributor to media outlets such as International Banker and Australian Financial Review.
