Endometrial cancer is the most common gynaecological malignancy and sixth most common cancer in women. The disease has distinctive symptoms of post menopausal bleeding and can be diagnosed early. Despite early diagnosis and good prognosis, the treatment options are quite limited. Standard treatment is bilateral removal of uterus and ovaries while advanced cases are managed by chemotherapy or hormonal therapy. Each treatment modality is associated with compromised fertility and high rates of recurrences. Finding new treatment options is a need in research. One of the therapeutic target is aquaporins which are transmembrane transport channels, responsible for transport of solutes across the membrane. There are 13 classes of mammalian aquaporins (aqp0-12) distributed all over the body. They mediate physiological functions  and are found to be involved in cancer progression and metastasis. Over expression of aquaporins had been found in colorectal cancer, breast cancer, glioblastoma, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. pharmacological blockade or knock down of aquaporins has been found promising in various cancers. The expression of aqp-2, -3, -5 have been found in endometrial cancer and knock down of aqp-2 and -5 has inhibited invasion of endometrial cancer cells. However, gap exists as to role of other aquaporins in endometrial cancer. My research deals with analysing expression of aquaporins in endometrial cancer cells and looking for new therapeutic strategies for endometrial cancer, that makes the basis of drug discovery for endometrial cancer.
