Sekhar Somenahalli is a Civil Engineer/Planner with leadership credentials in transport planning and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications. Sekhar has more than 25 years of academic and professional experience and previously held positions at University Malaya, Malaysia and Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), India. He has extensively researched and published on critical issues for transport development such as public transport service planning, transport & ageing, and vulnerability of transport network. Sekhar’s Endeavour and Mawson Lakes post-doctoral fellowship experiences allowed him to establish links with international universities and institutions in India, Japan, and the USA.

My research focusses on applying the principles of GIS across multiple discipline areas, including my core expertise area of transportation. My research Interests include:

  • Use of public transport smart card data for understanding travel behaviour
  • Travel time forecasting and Origin-Destination estimation based on BlueTooth traffic monitoring
  • Bus Transit Oriented Development — Strengths and challenges relative to rail
  • Use of GIS in analysing accessibility to services in urban areas.
  • Neighbourhood walkability and the walking behaviour of Australian adults
  • Transport and ageing: Extending quality of life for older people via public and private transport
  • Using GPS data to gain Insight into public transport travel time variability
  • Geographical information systems aided traffic accident analysis system
  • Transport vulnerability analysis of strategic road networks
