Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology

Sasanka has developed a strong academic and professional background in the construction industry. He graduated with a First-Class Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, in 2018. His early career as a Quantity Surveyor included working for Hyundai Engineering & Construction on one of Sri Lanka’s largest mixed development projects, gaining exposure to advanced technologies in large-scale construction environments.Later, Sasanka joined the University of Moratuwa as a Lecturer in Quantity Surveying, where he served for more than four years. During this time, he taught modules such as ICT for Quantity Surveyors, Civil Engineering and Building Services Measurement, Modern Procurement Systems, and Building Design and Construction. His academic work extended beyond teaching to research in construction management, tendering, procurement, organizational management, and sustainability. He has also been deeply engaged in digital construction research, investigating applications of web-based microservice architectures for contract documentation, digital twins, and cyber-physical systems for quantity surveying functions. Sasanka’s contributions have been recognized internationally, including receiving the CIOB Highly Commended Paper Award at the 11th World Construction Symposium in 2023 and the Outstanding Research Performance Award from the University of Moratuwa. He is a Member of the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) and an Accredited Green Professional of the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL), where he successfully contributed to achieving a Gold Green Building rating through consultancy. These professional affiliations, coupled with his academic excellence, international research exposure, and industry experience across diverse construction environments, have naturally shaped his current research focus. By bringing together his expertise in quantity surveying, sustainability, and digitalization, Sasanka is now exploring the potential of Scan-to-BIM technologies, 3D laser scanning, and AI-driven approaches to support automated BIM generation.

Sasanka’s current research explores the transformative potential of Scan-to-BIM technologies in the built environment. His work investigates how 3D laser scanning and emerging AI-driven techniques can be applied to generate accurate BIM models for both manual and automated processes. By bridging the gap between advanced digital surveying methods and practical construction workflows, this research seeks to improve accuracy, efficiency, and collaboration across project stakeholders.
A key focus of the project is examining how Scan-to-BIM methods influence and support different construction stakeholders in decision-making processes. This involves analysing the extent to which these digital tools can enhance data integration, streamline workflows, and reduce inefficiencies across the project lifecycle. By doing so, the research aims to demonstrate the potential of digital scanning techniques to not only improve project delivery but also strengthen stakeholder collaboration in increasingly complex construction environments.
