Welcome to my homepage and thank you for your interest. I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science in Physiotherapy, a Master of Physiotherapy in Manipulative and Sports Physiotherapy, a Graduate Diploma in Education Studies (Digital Learning) and a PhD from UniSA.
I am interested in improving the quality and safety of health care through teaching and research in evidence-based practice, implementation and health services research across a range of disciplines including allied health, public health, nursing and complementary and alternative medicine. My research also has a strong industry and end-user focus and engagement and therefore I partner with these stakeholders in implementing and evaluating best practice.
Currently my role is equally divided between academia and research at the Allied Health and Human Performance Unit. I collaborate with a team of academics and researchers in the fields of health services research and implementation science. Health services research is a multidisciplinary field of science which investigates health services, its structures and processes and the patient journey through the healthcare system. This is a unique field of science as it brings together health, social, environmental, personal and organisational philosophies. Simply put this multidisciplinary field of research examines how people get access to health care, how much health care costs, and what happens to people as a result of this care. The health services research group also uses evidence-based practice as a vehicle to improve the quality and safety of healthcare by accessing, synthesising and implementing best available evidence. In particular, researchers within this group, underpinned by the science of evidence implementation, shape, devise and implement behaviour and practice change strategies within health care settings. Members of this group work closely with health professionals, consumers, administrators and policymakers to ensure access to and delivery of quality and safe health care to all Australians.
I was the NHMRC NICS-MAC Fellow from 2008-2010. This Fellowship aimed to improve the management of Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD) by Physiotherapists and Chiropractors. In 2010, I was awarded a South Australian Tall Poppy Award. This award recognises the achievements of Australia’s outstanding young scientific researchers and communicators. This award was first created in 1998 by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) and aims to promote a more publicly engaged scientific leadership in Australia.
In 2010, I was appointed as the “Visiting Allied and Scientific Health Fellow”. In this role, I work closely with the Allied and Scientific Health Office at the Department of Health, South Australia. Working alongside the Chief Allied and Scientific Health Advisor for South Australia, Ms Catherine Turnbull, my role aims to integrate evidence into policy and practice in allied and scientific health.
In 2020, I was appointed as the UniSA - Calvary Clinical Lead. In this role, I work closely with UniSA and Calvary Adelaide Hospital stakeholders to promote partnership and collaboration across clinical education, research and health care service delivery.
You may write me down in history,
With your bitter twisted lies,
You may trod on me in the very dirt,
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Just like the moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise.

Dr Kumar has keen interest in quality measurement and evaluation of health service delivery. His interests also include research into bridging the gap between research evidence and clinical practice. Underpinning this interest is identifying and breaking down of barriers in uptake of research evidence into clinical practice and its influence in the quality of health care service delivery.

Dr Kumar also spearheads numerous initiatives with the aim of bridging the gap between research evidence and clinical practice. These include

  • Conducting education and training
  • Providing advice and mentoring
  • Undertaking numerous systematic reviews
  • Assisting in implementing and sustaining change initiatives

Dr Kumar has been a supported researcher since 2005 and in 2007 was accepted into the Early Career Research Developmental Program at University of South Australia. Following this, Dr Kumar was then selected as part of the 2012-2013 Research Leadership Development Program at University of South Australia.

In 2007, Dr Kumar was awarded University of South Australia Quality Teaching Award in recognition of his high standards of teaching.

Dr. Kumar has won numerous prizes for his research. These include

  • Health Sciences Research Student of the year (2003)
  • Best Presentation at the annual Research Degree Colloquium (2004)
  • Ruth Grant Prize (2006)
  • Geoff Maitland Prize (2010)
  • Best Veteran's Health Paper Award (Journal of Military and Veterans' Health) (2016)
  • University of South Australia Teaching Scholarship (2016)
  • Faculty Member of the Year, Public Health and Epidemiology. F1000Prime (2016)
  • Conventions Adelaide Grant Award (2016)
  • National Allied Health Inspiration Award (Finalist, 2017)
  • SA Health Award (in collaboration with the Child Health and Development teams of Country Health SA Local Health Network, 2017)
  • New Colombo Plan Award (2016, 2017 and 2018)
  • President's Award, South Australian Indian Medical Association (2019)
  • Physiotherapist of the year (Finalist) (2019)
  • Allied Health Educator Excellence Award (2019)
