Dr Sarah Dolan is a specialist General Practitioner and medical educator within the School of Medicine at Adelaide University. Her work brings together clinical practice and health professions education, with a focus on preparing medical students to become capable, compassionate doctors through authentic, clinically relevant learning.
Sarah has particular interests in scenario-based learning, clinical reasoning, curriculum and assessment design, and educational innovation. She is interested in how active and collaborative approaches to learning can support student engagement and help students integrate scientific knowledge with clinical practice. Her work has included the development and evaluation of gamified learning activities in medical education, including curriculum-aligned escape rooms, and the development of emerging medical educators.
Alongside her academic role, Sarah continues to practise as a General Practitioner, with particular clinical interests in women’s and children’s health, chronic disease management and preventive healthcare. Maintaining an active clinical role is central to her approach as an educator, allowing her to bring contemporary general practice and authentic patient care into the medical curriculum.
I am a Lecturer and Education Specialist within the School of Medicine, and a practising specialist General Practitioner. My academic work focuses on health professions education, with particular interests in scenario-based learning, clinical reasoning, student engagement and educational innovation.
My scholarship is grounded in my teaching practice and a commitment to evaluating and improving how medical students learn. I have contributed to educational research exploring gamification and peer-assisted learning, including the development and evaluation of curriculum-aligned escape room activities. I am particularly interested in how active and collaborative learning approaches can support student engagement, clinical reasoning and the development of future medical educators.

My teaching centres on creating authentic, challenging and inclusive learning experiences that prepare students for clinical practice. At the heart of my teaching is the opportunity to positively influence the health of our community by equipping and empowering the next generation of doctors. I use clinical scenarios, Socratic questioning and collaborative learning to develop clinical reasoning and help students connect foundational knowledge with patient care. My teaching extends beyond individual students through leadership in scenario-based learning, curriculum and assessment design, student support and the development of other educators. I am committed to educational innovation and evidence-informed practice, continually using student and colleague feedback to evaluate and strengthen the learning experiences I provide.
