I am a Discovery Early Career Research Awarard Fellow. My research focuses on modern literature in East Asia, Western Europe, and the Anglosphere, with special emphasis on the history of intellectual exchange between Chinese, English, French, and Japanese cultures. I was trained as a comparatist at the Universities of Texas, Edinburgh, and Sydney, from which I received my PhD with part of my time spent as a visiting research student at Keio University in Tokyo. I have particular interests in comparative poetics, philosophical approaches to literature, and global modernism. Central to much of my work is the history of vagueness as a literary and philosophical problem. Before coming to Adelaide, I was JSPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Tokyo and a DECRA Fellow at the University of Melbourne.
 
I am currently completing three projects. The first is a monograph on the idea of the semi-Asiatic in modernist literature in English, French, and Japanese. Parts of this project have been published or are forthcoming in venues including Journal of Modern Literature, Comparative Literature Studies, and English Language Notes.
 
I am also co-editing two volumes: a collection on global modernism and simultaneity with Kunio Shin (University of Tokyo), and, with Mark Byron (University of Sydney) and Andrew Houwen (Tokyo Woman's Christian University), an edition of Mori Kainan and Ernest Fenollosa's History of Chinese Poetry.
