Dr Rob Whait is the course coordinator for Taxation Law and Policxy (Masters) and Taxation Law (Undergraduate). He is also the Founder and Director of Adelaide University Tax Clinic that provides free tax assistance and representation to those who cannot complete their tax by themselves and who cannot afford a tax agent. It also provides valuable work experience to students by bridging the gap between the university and the tax profession.
His research is directed toward making the tax system fairer and easier to negotiate by removing legal and administrative barriers, improving consistency in ATO decision making and ensuring that taxpayers’ rights are protected, especially for vulnerable taxpayers. His research also involves studying gaps in tax literacy to inform the development of remedial programs and other assistance.
Rob is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor. He is a member of the National Tax Clinic Stewrdship Committee and the Communication Content Working Group (an Australian Taxation Office working group). He has previously acted as the Secretary of the Australasian Tax Teachers Association and joint editor of the Association's journal. Prior to becoming an academic, Rob was employed for several years in the tax profession in small and large accounting firms, including one of the ‘Big 4’.
In Rob's time as an academic, he has received the following Business School Staff Excellence awards: 2007, 2008 Quality Teaching; 2009, 2010, 2011 Supported Teacher Award; 2014 Commendation for Research Excellence; 2015 Top Early Career Teacher; 2017 Research Excellence - Top Research Team; 2018 Achievement in Industry Collaboration; 2019 Excellence in Collaborative Research Supervision; and 2020 Teaching Commendation.
