Research Title:

An investigation of facilitating critical thinking in English language classes when listening and speaking are practised in an Indonesian high school

Project Summary:

This research project addresses the gaps in understanding Critical Thinking facilitation in an Indonesian English as an Additional Language high school context. The research investigates Critical Thinking in English listening and speaking tasks through teachers’ perceptions and practices. The significance of the study moves the field past entrenched practices and partial theorisation of Critical Thinking in English listening and speaking by providing the conceptual framework of Critical Thinking in English Listening and Speaking (CTELS) that will be useful for guiding English teachers in Indonesia and other similar contexts. The study also develops knowledge that informs Indonesian pre-service and in-service teachers’ professional learning towards Critical Thinking facilitation in English language teaching and learning, an area of major interest to the Indonesian Ministry of National Education and other similar contexts.
